Kemaloh Lundayeh–English Dictionary

$45.00

Ricky Ganang, Jay Crain, and Vicki Pearson-Rounds, compilers

From the Introduction:

Begun as a word-list compiled by Jay in 1968-69 during his dissertation research in Mengalong Lundayeh communities in southern Sabah, the dictionary here began in earnest in 1992. That year, Jay and Vicki visited Sarawak where they took the advice of Jayl Langub and traveled to Miri. While there, they attended a meeting in the home of Dr. Judson Tagal on June 19. Together with Mutang Tagal and a visiting Lundayeh minister from Indonesia, all discussed their concerns about the loss of their language. After visiting Lun Bawang in the Ba' Kelalan area and discussing the issue of language there, it became clear that many felt a need for their language to be codified. At the end of their trip, Vicki and Jay met Ricky Ganang in Ranau-Ranau, Sabah. Ricky had been growing a word list of his own over several years. While meeting at Padan Danor's house it was decided that a seminar should be held the next year to bring together Lundayeh/Lun Bawang people from East Kalimantan, Sarawak and Sabah to discuss going forward with a dictionary of the language. On June 10-11, 1993 representatives from the cultural associations of Sabah, Sarawak and East Kalimantan met to discuss the creation of the dictionary. This discussion was continued the following year at a seminar held in Long Tuma, Sarawak. During this and subsequent summers (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006), Jay and Vicki traveled to numerous villages, towns and cities in Sabah, Sarawak and East Kalimantan to continue to add to the dictionary and record oral literature. Ricky Ganang also continued to add to the now combined list in Sabah and during several visits to East Kalimantan. In 2001 Ricky came to Sacramento, California to work with Jay and Vicki on adding usage sentences throughout the dictionary and finalizing the orthography.
